Our small weaving studio is full of life, especially when we are weaving skirt fabric, plaids, and woolen coat fabric. We have two looms – both are German. One, a Schönherr, is from around 1893 and was brought to the Faroe Islands in the early 1970s. It is of an older type with rollers to control the shafts and large, heavy shuttles (shuttle-loom). Along with this loom, a Schönherr warping board was also purchased, which we use to prepare the warp. This means we work every day with equipment that is over 100 years old. Safe to say it is of exceptional quality.
The other loom is a Dornier from 1970, which was bought used from Denmark in 1997. It is more modern with punch cards to control the shafts and colors, and uses hooks instead of shuttles (rapier-loom).
In addition, there are winding machines to wind regular bobbins, as well as to make bobbins for the shuttles.
